Why Publish?

From reading the first page of Happy Birthday I knew that this poorly photocopied but beautifully written zine deserved a much bigger audience. It's stutter writing, and vivid scenes of a pill-and-pop-music addicted teenager and his exploits around Athens Georgia, floored me, it was something that I'd been looking for and hadn't found till then. It was a true and unique story and people needed to read it. They had to read it! And, I thought, if I didn't bring it to them, who would?

Now I'll say that independent publishing isn't for everyone, you really have to feel the same way about your book, that I felt about Happy Birthday to bring a book from poorly written scraps of paper, to something people can (and want) to read. You shouldn't do it if you don't feel that way anyhow, I mean there's enough crappy writing out there already, why pile on more? There are also some people who like others to do all the work for them, but that's not the way I like to do it. And that's not the way I'm showing here. This is for the people out there who actually enjoy the work involved in putting a book together, and want to learn more about it.

So what are we doing here? Well, the purpose of this site isn't to tell you if your writing is good enough to be published or not, there's no way a web site can do that. All we're going to do here is try and help you to get that book out, whether a zine, chapbook, or paperback book. You have to be the one to decide if it should be published. But then again, if you're here, you're at least considering publishing something. So I recommend going through this web site before deciding to publish anything, because it take a lot of time, effort, and sometimes money to see it through to the end.
