Chicago Alderman Bennett Lawson Defends Trans Kids In Sports: 'We All Stand Together'
"This is a decision that someone is making at the core of who they are, and one of the hardest things I can’t even imagine going through."
To the horror of Democrats nationwide, Donald Trump was once again elected President of the United States in 2024. Like his first run for the highest office in the land, his path to victory was paved with the demonization of minorities, and, in particular, young trans athletes.
On Guerrilla Press’ latest flagship podcast episode, Chicago’s 44th Ward Alderman Bennett Lawson spoke with hosts Nick Hausman and EJ Cameron about the right’s ongoing obsession with and vilification of the trans community.
“I don’t think it’s a real issue, right?” Lawson began. “If it were about trans kids in sports, we could look at the numbers to say that this is such a minority or such a small number that isn’t being influenced. I mean, no trans kid is saying, ‘Hey, I want to be a more competitive swimmer, so I’m going to transition.’ Right?
“I mean, this is a decision that someone is making at the core of who they are, and one of the hardest things I can’t even imagine going through. And, as a young person, right? We all struggle with things. To struggle with your identity, your gender identity, is really, really tough.
“So that’s being used as a way to protect women. I saw this horrible group. It’s Democrats for, like, normal trans policy or some stupid name like that.”
Hausman interjected to bemoan Democrats who have moved toward the center on the issue and abandoned trans kids in the process.
“It’s like, JD, Vance’s, what? Regular gay guys? Normal gay guys?” the Alderman posited. “What did he call me? Try to call me. ‘Ef you. JD, Vance.”
Cameron encouraged the Alderman to say how he really feels and not be afraid to use profanity.
“Okay, Fuck you, JD Vance,” the Alderman blurted out, to loud applause. “I mean, try and tick people off like, ‘Oh, we’re Democrats, but we just have issues with the trans community or trans policy.’ Or, ‘We’re gay guys, but no, you know, we don’t need the trans stuff.’ Fuck that. We all stand together, and we all have to have each other’s backs, right?”
Lawson’s full interview is now available on the Guerrilla Press podcast feed and YouTube channel.
