Miguel Alvelo Rivera Makes The Case For State-Run Grocery Stores
Rivera is endorsed by Run For Something and is running for the Illinois 40th District State Representative seat
Guerrilla Press was back at Chicago’s The Annoyance Theatre this past Sunday night, continuing its series of live podcast interviews with Run For Something-endorsed candidates. One of their two guests was Illinois 40th District State Representative candidate Miguel Alvelo Rivera.
Rivera
“State-run grocery stores operate within the market, so they actually provide something that is supposed to be there,” Rivera explained. “But unfortunately, because we have let the capitalist economy run completely unchecked, essentially, we have monopolies when it comes to essential items.
“So, these big corporations that own the majority of our grocery stores can put out any price that they want. Yeah, now the state-run grocery store is not based on creating a continuous surplus or a continuous profit on top of profit; it is actually based on making sure that people can afford the things that they need to live life.
“So, when you open up a grocery store that sells things for cheaper than another grocery store, that puts the more expensive grocery store in kind of an awkward situation.”
